Description This unit covers the skills and knowledge to cut uniform synthetics and printed leathers using machines, knives and interlocking knives.

Learning Outcomes and Application The unit applies to the cutting of uniform synthetic and printed leather materials to specifications and workplace quality standards using machines, knives and interlocking knives. It involves the limited application of discretion, initiative and judgement while working to defined procedures and methods.Work may be conducted in small to large scale enterprises and may involve individual and team activities.The application of this unit is according to OHS practices of the enterprise and workplace practices, which may include:requirements prescribed by legislation, awards, agreements and conditions of employmentstandard operating procedureswork instructionsoral, written and visual communicationquality practices, including responsibility for maintenance of own work quality and contribution to quality improvement of team or section outputhousekeepingtasks related to environmental protection, waste disposal, pollution control, and recyclingThis unit requires the application of skills associated with planning and organising to cut printed materials. Element: Assess different qualities and types of materials
  • Materials are assessed against job specifications.
  • Various types and finishes of materials are checked according to work ticket.
  • Materials are sorted according to colour and shade and other specifications.
       
Element: Start up, shut down, adjust and carry out minor maintenance with safety
  • Machines are started up and shut down according to safety regulations.
  • Cutting board is regularly cleaned, turned and maintained.
  • Striker plate is regularly checked for distortion and damage and irregularities reported.
       
Element: Cut linings and components from materials by press or hand
  • Knives are selected according to job specifications and size requirements and used according to OHS practices.
  • Pressures on press are adjusted to knife sizes and shapes.
  • Work ticket specifications are followed according to pairs and pieces.
  • Parts are cut to workplace quality standards in relation to materials flaws.
  • Individual pairs are selected, colour and grain matched to workplace quality standards.
  • Pairs are cut to achieve best yield according to appropriate allowance.
  • Distortions and defects on press cutting knives, dies and cutting boards are identified and appropriate action taken.
  • Work is carried out according to OHS practices.
